You can only imagine the Joy’s a mom feels when she brings a baby into this world. In that moment all you see is the light of something beautiful you created and brought into this world. Your mind is still and at ease. No worry in the world. Just tremendous amounts a joy and love.

Our focus is to love raise and support our children. That joy just carries on day by day and you mother this child and dream about who they will become one day.

Until one day it all changes.

We have come from a place where we loss learnt skills. Words, facial expressions. Sharing a smile. Pointing. Gone.

No eye contact. Just a dazed eye who can’t seem to focus on anything.

Minimal a repetitive play skills.

Extreme behavioural outbursts. You would never ever believe that one day your child would literally be pulling your hair. Kicking, hitting and biting you out of the extreme pain they feel inside.

Not being able to ask for or gesture or point to what he wanted or needed. Can you imagine his extreme frustration. And my extreme worry when he was sick.

I was dressing him like a baby and he wasn’t potty trained until he was 4 years old.

High sensory issues. My boy hated physical contact. I couldn’t hold, touch, hug or kiss my boy.

With many years of therapy and extremely hard work on both my part and his.

Fast foward to today.

J has a wide range of play skills. He has a free spirit and absolutely loves everything he comes across. He is very adaptive and inclusive.

He can advocate what he wants and needs for himself.

Better communication skills. Making and maintaining learnt skills. Making and maintaining new friendships.

He has the potential to not only work hard towards his goals but to create them!

He can finally ride a bike with no training wheels.

He can dress, feed, and shower himself.

He has the funniest sense of humor. A huge heart. And shows empathy.

He is very artistic and very compassionate. And I can finally hug, squeeze, kiss and tickle my boy.

We have been kicked out of stores. Eyed down. Judged.

My son has been mistreated. And none of that has ever dimmed his light.

He has a special heart. And he most definately stole mine.

Happy World Autism Awareness Day.

We wear blue today for you my son and all the Angel’s who have been placed here on earth. You sure have taught me more to life than anyone I have ever met.
